On 1 July 2026 Ofgem's new typical consumption assumptions put the price cap at £1,663 per year for a typical dual fuel household paying by direct debit, up £186 on the previous quarter. Measured against the older consumption assumptions used in previous quarters, the same rise works out at £1,862, up £221. Both figures use the same unit rates, they're just built on different assumptions about how much energy a typical home uses. The cap does not limit your total bill. It sets the maximum unit rate and standing charge your supplier can apply.

Fixed tariffs from several suppliers are currently priced below the July cap. The gap between the cheapest available fixed deal and the cap rate is around £100 a year for a typical household, based on live comparison figures checked across several UK regions. That gap exists because suppliers set fixed tariff prices based on wholesale market conditions at the time they design the product, and current wholesale prices allow some suppliers to offer rates below the cap. Whether fixing makes sense for your household depends on your current tariff, your usage, and what you think happens to wholesale prices over the next 12 months. Cornwall Insight, the energy consultancy whose quarterly forecasts are widely cited, expects the October 2026 cap to rise again. Locking in a fixed rate now protects against that increase for the length of the fix.
