About EDF Energy

EDF Energy is the UK retail arm of EDF, the French state-owned energy company whose full name is Electricite de France. The French government is the majority shareholder of EDF. EDF Energy has been operating in the UK domestic market since 2002 when EDF acquired a series of regional electricity businesses including SWEB Energy, Seeboard, and London Electricity Board, all of which had been privatised from the former state electricity boards.

EDF Energy serves approximately 5.5 million domestic customers in the UK and is one of the country's largest energy suppliers. The company is also one of the most significant operators of nuclear power stations in the UK, including Hinkley Point B and Sizewell B. It is the developer of Hinkley Point C in Somerset, the first new nuclear power station to be built in the UK in decades.

The company's registered office in the UK is at Nova North, 11 Bressenden Place, London SW1E 5BY.

Tariff types offered

EDF offers fixed rate tariffs with a range of term lengths. The company has frequently positioned fixed tariffs competitively against the Ofgem price cap, often pricing them as among the cheapest available from large suppliers. Fixed tariffs may include exit fees if leaving before the end date. Check terms at the time you compare.

Variable tariffs are available as a standard option, subject to the Ofgem price cap. EDF's standard variable tariff rises and falls in line with each quarterly cap adjustment.

EDF has offered tracker tariffs with standing charge discounts below the standard variable rate. Check current availability at your postcode.

EDF's FreePhase tariffs are time-of-use products with different electricity rates across three periods of the day: a cheaper overnight window, a standard mid-range daytime period, and a peak rate during evening hours. A smart meter is required.

Prepayment tariffs are available for customers with pay-as-you-go meters.
