Utility Matchmaker is an independent energy information and referral service operated by IOM Digital Design Limited. This page explains how the site earns, how our partner comparison tool works, and the principles we follow to ensure our content remains independent and useful.
How Utility Matchmaker earns
Utility Matchmaker earns a referral commission when a visitor clicks through to our partner comparison platform and successfully switches energy supplier. The commission is paid by the energy supplier to TheEnergyShop as the platform operator, who in turn pays a referral fee to Utility Matchmaker.
This is how the payment flows:
- You compare tariffs on TheEnergyShop's platform via our partner link.
- You choose a tariff and your switch completes successfully.
- The new supplier pays TheEnergyShop a standard acquisition fee.
- TheEnergyShop pays Utility Matchmaker a referral commission.
The commission is a standard industry arrangement. You pay exactly the same tariff price whether you switch through Utility Matchmaker or go directly to TheEnergyShop or the supplier directly. Our referral link does not add any cost to your bill.
Commission amounts vary by fuel type:
- Gas only switch: approximately £20
- Electricity only switch: approximately £20
- Dual fuel switch (gas and electricity): approximately £40
These are approximate figures based on TheEnergyShop's current affiliate programme. Exact commission depends on the supplier and the tariff. Commission is typically paid around three months after a successful switch completes, following the customer cooling-off period.
Our comparison partner: TheEnergyShop
Live tariff comparison and switching on Utility Matchmaker is powered by TheEnergyShop (Energy Services Online Limited), an energy comparison service that has operated since 2003.
TheEnergyShop is fully accredited under the Ofgem Confidence Code, the regulatory standard for fair and impartial domestic energy comparison services in the UK. Their platform currently powers comparison services for over 400 UK affiliate sites including Which?, the UK consumer organisation.
When you click any comparison link on this site, you leave Utility Matchmaker and enter TheEnergyShop's platform. All tariff data, postcode lookups, supplier integrations, and switching applications are handled by TheEnergyShop. Utility Matchmaker does not hold, process, or store any tariff pricing data, personal application data, or switching records. Those are held exclusively by TheEnergyShop under their own privacy policy and regulatory obligations.
What this means for our content
Utility Matchmaker earns commission regardless of which supplier you choose to switch to. We do not earn more from one supplier than another based on tariff selection. Commission is based on a completed switch, not on which specific tariff or supplier you choose.
This means:
- We have no financial incentive to favour any particular energy supplier in our editorial content.
- Our supplier profiles are educational background information only. They are not rankings, endorsements, or placement opportunities.
- Our guides, FAQs, and calculators are written to inform. They do not steer visitors toward any specific supplier.
- Illustrative tariff examples on this site use publicly available market data and are clearly labelled as illustrative. They are not live quotes or endorsements.
What we do not do
We do not accept payment from energy suppliers for favourable coverage, prominent placement, or specific mentions in our content.
We do not rank suppliers by commission rate. Our supplier profiles are listed alphabetically and contain the same content structure for every supplier regardless of their size or market position.
We do not show comparison results on this site. All comparison results are shown on TheEnergyShop's platform, which operates independently of Utility Matchmaker's content decisions.
We do not provide energy, financial, or regulated advice. Our content is educational information and switching resources. Decisions about which tariff to choose are yours to make based on your own circumstances and the live comparison results available on TheEnergyShop's platform.
Ofgem Confidence Code
TheEnergyShop, the platform that powers comparison and switching on this site, has been accredited by Ofgem under the Confidence Code since 2003.
The Ofgem Confidence Code is the UK's standard for domestic energy price comparison services. Accredited services must meet requirements including:
- Whole-of-market comparison, showing tariffs from all suppliers who participate, not a curated subset
- Accurate pricing, with tariff data that is current and reflects actual available prices
- Impartial presentation, with results not ordered by commercial relationships with suppliers
- Clear disclosure, with commercial relationships disclosed to consumers
The Confidence Code accreditation applies to the comparison platform operated by TheEnergyShop. You can verify TheEnergyShop's accreditation status at ofgem.gov.uk.
Your rights as a consumer
Switching through TheEnergyShop's platform gives you the same statutory consumer rights as switching through any other Ofgem-accredited comparison service.
These include:
- A 14-day statutory cooling-off period from the date you agree a new energy contract.
- Protection under Ofgem's Faster Switching rules. Most domestic switches complete within five working days.
- No interruption to your gas or electricity supply during or after the switch.
- Credit balance protection if your old supplier owes you money after your final bill.
If you have a complaint about a switch you completed through this site, contact TheEnergyShop in the first instance as the platform operator. For complaints about an energy supplier specifically, the Energy Ombudsman provides independent dispute resolution for domestic customers.
